CEFR or IELTS: Which Certificate Is Right for You?
Compare CEFR levels and IELTS band scores by purpose, exam format, preparation and the requirements of the receiving organization.
CEFR and IELTS are not the same. CEFR is an international framework that describes language ability from A1 to C2. IELTS is a specific test that awards band scores for Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking.
In Uzbekistan, CEFR is often discussed together with national or multi-level certification. Your choice should begin with where you plan to submit the result.
Start with the organization's official requirement
Check which certificate and minimum result a university, employer or government organization accepts. International universities often state an IELTS requirement, while a local benefit or admission condition may be linked to a national certificate level.
How do the scoring systems differ?
IELTS uses a band scale from 0 to 9 and reports each skill separately. CEFR describes ability through A1, A2, B1, B2, C1 and C2. Approximate comparisons are possible, but the results should not be treated as completely interchangeable.
What is shared and what is exam-specific?
Both goals require grammar, vocabulary, reading, listening, writing and speaking. The differences are in task types, timing and assessment criteria. Even with strong general English, you need to learn the format of the chosen exam.
