A High-Score Strategy for IELTS Writing Task 2
Learn how to analyze the question, choose a position, build paragraphs and improve all four Writing Task 2 criteria.
A high score in Writing Task 2 begins with answering the question fully and developing ideas logically, not with using as many difficult words as possible. You must write at least 250 words, and Task 2 has twice the weight of Task 1.
Repeat the same clear process in every practice essay to improve speed and quality together.
Identify the question type and exact task
Opinion, discussion, problem-solution and two-part questions require different responses. Knowing the topic is not enough. Mark every part you must answer and decide where your position needs to be stated clearly.
Create a short plan before writing
Use 3–5 minutes to define the role of the introduction, two main paragraphs and conclusion. Each main paragraph should contain one central idea, an explanation and a relevant example. Writing without a plan often causes repetition or a partial response.

Work on all four assessment criteria
Task Response measures how fully you answer the question. Coherence and Cohesion assesses organization, Lexical Resource focuses on accurate vocabulary, and Grammatical Range and Accuracy considers variety and correctness. A weak criterion can limit the whole score.
Make checking systematic
Do not try to rewrite the entire essay at the end. Check verb tense, agreement, articles, linking and whether each paragraph still answers the question. After teacher feedback, choose three repeated errors to monitor in the next essay.
Task 2 improves faster when every essay is analyzed against the criteria, not simply when more essays are written. Combine planning, a clear position, developed paragraphs and regular feedback in one routine.
